Update: Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit has invoked its mandate to investigate the crash. The SIU is brought in to investigate whenever a civilian is seriously injured or killed during an interaction with police.

A woman is in life-threatening condition in hospital after she was struck by a police vehicle while walking in Brampton on Friday night.

Shortly before 8 p.m., Peel Regional Police said the woman, 29, was struck near Central Park Drive and Hilldale Crescent, a residential area near Chinguacousy Park. She was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.

Central Park Drive is closed for about 200 metres between Howden Boulevard and Hilldale Crescent while police investigate. Motorists have been advised to avoid the area.

While police did not share what led to the crash, Brampton is under a weather warning due to an ongoing snowstorm. Environment Canada expects five to 10 centimetres of snow tonight and high winds have been blowing the snow, reducing visibility.
