A woman is on the road to recovery after suffering a slashed neck wound during a domestic violence incident in Whitby last week.

On Friday (Feb. 17) following reports of a woman with a neck injury, Durham Regional Police responded to a gas station near Brock Street South and Consumers Drive shortly before 4 p.m.

Officers say they found a 34-year-old woman suffering from significant injuries. She was subsequently transported to a hospital in the Toronto area with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police have refrained from releasing additional details about the victim, including her name or place of residence.

According to investigators, following the incident, the suspect fled the area with a small child in a vehicle.

With the help of the Ontario Provincial Police, the suspect was located and arrested without incident.

The child was unharmed, police say.

A 40-year-old man from Mississauga faces multiple criminal charges including aggravated assault, assault with a weapon and failing to comply with probation.

Police have not disclosed the suspect’s name or provided an image at this time.

Additionally, officers have also not specified the relationship between the suspect, the victim, and the child.

Durham police are urging residents to recognize that domestic violence can impact anyone, regardless of age, gender, race, or income.

“This incident serves as a crucial reminder that we must come together as a community to support those affected by domestic violence and work towards creating safer environments for everyone,” Durham police noted.

If individuals or someone they know experiences domestic violence, they are encouraged to seek help.
