Woman ‘exploited’ by human trafficker leads to charges for Brampton man: police

Charges have been laid against a man from Brampton after police say he took control over and exploited a woman in the sex trade.

Earlier this month, officers with the vice unit began an investigation involving a female victim in the sex trade, Peel Regional Police say.

Police say a male suspect “exploited the victim,” profited from her earnings and took control of her activities.

The investigation led officers to arrest a 31-year-old man from Brampton on Sunday who was charged with multiple offences.

Peel Regional Police say Michael Smith, 31, of Brampton has been charged with trafficking in persons, exercise control, advertising sexual services, receiving benefit resulting from, trafficking in persons, and material benefit from sexual services.

The accused was held for a bail hearing and appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton, police say.

Investigators believe that there may be additional victims related to prostitution offences and human trafficking, and are asking anyone with information to contact Peel police by calling (905) 453-2121 ext. 3555.
