Woman charged after 5-year-old ‘wasn’t properly secured’ in Hamilton collision

The Hamilton Police Service (HPS) announced Wednesday (Jan. 27) that a 32-year-old Brampton woman has been charged in relation to a single-vehicle collision that occurred in the east end of Hamilton last year.
Police now say her 5-year-old was not properly secured in the vehicle when the child suffered “life-threatening” injuries.
On Sept. 8, 2020, emergency crews responded to reports of a single-vehicle collision at the intersection of Centennial Parkway and South Service Rd.
“Evidence gathered at the scene indicated the driver, a 32-year-old female from Brampton was operating her vehicle westbound on South Service Road when she lost control, left the roadway and collided with a light standard,” wrote HPS in an official statement.
“Her 5-year-old daughter, who was a passenger in the vehicle was transported to the hospital with serious injuries.”
Police say their investigation found that the woman as at-fault for the collision and her daughter “was not properly secured within the vehicle.”

The child is still recovering from her injuries.
The driver is now facing the following charges under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act:
- Careless Driving Causing Bodily Harm
- Fail to Ensure Child Properly Secured
She is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 8, 2021.
Vehicle speed has been ruled out as a factor in the collision, according to police.
