Woman believed to be swept out to sea was a Brampton student

A 22-year-old woman, a former student in Brampton, is believed to have died after being caught by a wave and swept into the ocean off the coast of Newfoundland.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary says the incident occurred on Jan. 15 when Sandeep Kaur and a friend visited Cape Spear near the province’s capital of St. John’s.

According to reports, Kaur and a male companion were walking along the rocky coast when a wave hit and knocked her into the ocean. It is believed her friend jumped into the cold North Atlantic waters to try to save her.

Several rescue teams searched the area but she could not be found.

Signs posted at Cape Spear warn of the hazardous conditions near the shoreline.

A Kaur family spokesperson said the pair may not have been aware of the dangers because of a language barrier.

Kaur arrived in Canada in 2022 as an international student and lived and studied in Brampton. She graduated with a diploma in tourism.

It is believed she was given permanent residency status and moved to Newfoundland last fall and had been working at United Parcel Service in St. John’s.

It hasn’t been determined what her relationship with her male companion was, but reports indicate that he was also a former Brampton resident.

Kaur’s family are hoping that searches continue to recover her body and that they are waiting for more information from police to find out what happened the day she disappeared.
