There is now more room for pedestrians and cyclists to cross the Burlington Canal Lift Bridge.

Recent work done on the bridge — which carries Eastport Dr. across the canal — includes wider sidewalks to provide more room for pedestrians and cyclists to both pass safely at the same time.

The bridge was closed at the beginning of this year for maintenance and re-opened this week.

Other work done included the replacement of the lift span deck and the upgrading of the approach area for vehicles.

The work was carried out during the period when the lift is closed for the winter months.

Constructed in 1961, the 381-ft bridge is the sixth bridge to span the canal since 1830. The lift allows vessels to enter and exit Hamilton Harbour into Lake Ontario.

More work on the structure will start next winter and is meant to increase the bridge’s lifespan by 30 years.
