The people have spoken: Whitby will open two natural skating rinks in its public parks this winter.

The rinks will open in Peel Park and Brooklin Memorial Park sometime in January. An exact date has not been chosen as operation will be heavily dependant on weather. The date will be announced when better projections can be made.

The Peel Park rink will be built in the lacrosse box and the Brooklin will be in the tennis courts.

When they do open, they will operate from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day. A capacity limit will be in place to observe social distancing. Residents will get on the ice on a first-come first-served basis.

Town staff will visit daily to ensure COVID protocols are being followed and to maintain the rinks.

Residents will need their own skates, and the Town “highly recommends” they wear a helmet on the ice and come equipped for the cold.
