A Whitby man is charged with second-degree murder following what police have called the “suspicious disappearance” of two women in Whitby.

Ava Burton, 58, and her mother, Tatilda Noble, 85, were reported missing from their Sceptor Place home on the afternoon of September 14.

Police were called to the scene after a family member called for a wellness check.

While the women have not been located, police say they found evidence of “suspicious circumstances.”

On Friday, October 22, investigators from Durham police’s Major Crime Homicide Unit arrested 30 year old Whitby man Joshua Burton. He is charged with two counts of Second Degree Murder.

“The suspect is the son and grandson of the missing females. He was arrested in Oshawa on Friday afternoon,” said police.

Both missing women have yet to be found and are presumed dead. Police are continuing to investigate and search for the women’s remains.

Anyone with further information related to these homicides is asked to contact police at 1-888-579-1520, ext. 5411.
