Whitby man charged after violent car jacking

A Whitby man is in custody after Durham Police say he assaulted a woman and stole her car Thursday evening.

Central West officers were called to Dundas St. E and Glen Hill Dr. east of downtown at 9:30 p.m. on April 20 for reports of a car jacking. Police say the 24 year-old man approached the woman and tried to remove her car keys from her pocket. A struggle ensued and the suspect was able to escape in the woman’s car with the victim still hanging on to the vehicle.

Officers were quickly on the scene and were able to locate the man and recover the victim’s vehicle. The woman suffered minor injuries in the attack.

Singh Sukhbeer is facing five charges including robbery with violence, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, dangerous operation of a vehicle, disobey court order and possession of heroin.

He was held for a bail hearing.
