A new crew is being assembled by the Town of Whitby to clean up litter along the town’s lakeshore as the town staff offer new methods and advice for residents to keep their communities clean.

Town Council approved the new squad last month to be made up of seasonal employees. The crew will operate throughout the spring to prepare the waterfront for the summer tourist season.

The crew will be stationed along the local beaches to empty waste bins and clean up litter found around their sites. The Town encourages residents to aid this crew by using the proper disposal bins, or better yet taking all garbage back to be disposed of at home.

Whitby is offering other ways to keep communities cleaner though an anti-litter app, through which residents, businesses and community groups can schedule a one-time clean-up.

Through the app, residents and community groups can “adopt” parks, trails and roads for a two-year commitment to keep the areas clean. The Town will provide clean-up kits of bags and gloves to accommodate the litter collection and will pick up the trash at a predetermined location as long as they’re advised at least 72 hours in advance.

The Town recommends residents assist in these clean-up effort by ensuring they clean-up after their dogs, and ensuring their recycling doesn’t blow away on blustery days. Residents are encouraged to stack light weight item under heavier pieces, or hold off until their next scheduled garbage day.
