Whitby has cut the ribbon on its largest single condo development in 30 years.

On Feb. 3, Whitby Mayor Elizabeth Roy led a ribbon-cutting ceremony for Station No. 3, a six-storey, 160-unit condo building. The development sits in downtown Whitby on the corner of Brock and Colborne Sts.

Station No. 3 is named after the old Firehall No. 3 that called to area home from 1964 until 2010. It sits smack dab in the middle of Whitby’s Business Improvement Area (BIA), home to some 300 businesses like stores and restaurants.

Slightly further away, both the lakeshore beaches and the Consumers Dr. entertainment complex are within 10 minutes of the development.

“We have waited a long time for this milestone,” Roy says. “Discussions around repurposing the fire hall site go back decades. It’s incredible to see this project taking shape and to look ahead to the positive impact this will have on our downtown.”

Brookfield Residential is behind the building. They’ve worked on 30,000 homes in Ontario since their founding in 1956.

“I want to thank Brookfield Residential for working with the Town of Whitby to repurpose this site and invest in our downtown,” Roy says. “We have recently seen an increase in the number of new businesses opening in the downtown and Station No. 3 will help us continue the momentum.”

The building, set to span 10,000 square feet, is currently under construction. It’s expected to be finished by the end of next year, after breaking ground in March 2022.

They have yet to announce the starting prices for units in the building, but prospective buyers can sign up for updates online.

Station No. 3 is but one of the numerous new residential developments underway in Whitby right now. The town surpassed its all-time building permit approval record in 2021 with 2,687 permits. Collectively these equal to more than $1 billion worth of investment in the town.
