Whitby B&E turns to police chase on Hwy. 401, two from Brampton arrested

A Whitby break-and-enter evolved into a police chase which culminated in the arrest of two men from Brampton and the discovery of drugs.

A business owner called 911 shortly before 6 a.m. on Sept. 8 to report two men were trying to break into his Wentworth St. E. storefront. When Durham Regional Police officer responded a suspicious vehicle which immediately fled the scene.

The car sped off to Hwy. 401 heading east. Police were able to head them off at the Stevenson Rd. exit where they blockaded the highway. The pair tried to flee the car on foot but were quickly arrested.

The two suspects as well as an officer sustained minor injuries during the chase. All three have been medically examined and cleared. Since the injuries are minor, the Special Investigations Unit did not invoke their investigative mandate.

Gurdeep Dhaliwal, 30 of Brampton, seven charges including break and enter, possession of break-in tools, possession of stolen property and three drug possession charges for heroin, meth and another unspecified substance. He has also been charged with breaking a probation order.

Rajit Singh, 43 of Brampton, been charged with all the same offences as Dhaliwal in addition to charges of dangerous driving, fleeing police, driving while prohibited and driving with a suspended license. He was also charged with breaking a release order and a probation order for total of 12 charges.
