Wheelchairs needed at Brampton, Etobicoke hospitals

A need for dozens of new wheelchairs at hospitals in Brampton and Etobicoke has the William Osler Health System asking the public for donations.

Osler is looking to raise funds for 40 new wheelchairs across its hospitals and health centres, including Brampton Civic and Peel Memorial.

The drive is part of Osler’s GivingTuesday campaign – a charity fundraising day following the consumer-driven spending of Black Friday deals and sales.

The health system is setting out to raise $20,000 to fund the purchase of 40 new wheelchairs for Osler facilities, like Brampton Civic and Peel Memorial and Etobicoke General.

Osler says wheelchairs are one of the most used pieces of equipment in a hospital, meaning they need to be replaced or repaired on a regular basis.

The cost of each new wheelchair is approximately $500. And to entice the community to give generously, automotive dealers The Humberview Group is matching all donations to Osler up to $1 million until the end of the year.

“Your gift — no matter how large or small — will go twice as far toward the purchase of these chairs, which we have all used and needed at some point and are used in literally every area of the hospital,” said Ken Mayhew, president and CEO of the William Osler Health System Foundation. “Every donation will make a difference.”

Osler says its facilities saw more than 229,000 emergency and urgent care centre visits last year, and more than 497,000 outpatient visits.

Donations to the foundation will help enhance services at local hospitals and better meet the evolving health care needs in Brampton.
