What’s open and closed in Oshawa, Pickering, Ajax, Whitby on Labour Day

This year, Labour Day falls on Monday, September 6 in Oshawa, Pickering, Ajax, Whitby and Clarington.
Originally declared to honour hard-working men and women and give them a day of rest, it is now just another work day (albeit with extra pay) for many in the restaurant and tourist sector.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there will be no major public events in Durham Region due to physical distancing restrictions and some businesses that are usually open might still be closed.
Open:
- Most restaurants, especially those with patios. Call ahead to be sure
- Movie theatres
- Camp Samac outdoor pool in Oshawa by appointment, with limited use
- Outdoor recreational facilities, such as parks, beaches and splash pads
- Mass immunization clinics in Ajax (Audley Recreation Centre) and Oshawa (Campus Ice Centre) have added Labour Day hours: Ajax 9:30-4:30 and Oshawa 9:30-6:30
- Four Beer Stores in Durham: 200 Ritson Rd. N in Oshawa, 75 Kingston Rd. E in Ajax, 3950 Brock St. N in Whitby and 1355 Kingston Rd in Pickering
- Most craft breweries that are normally open Mondays, including: Town (12-8), 5 Paddles (9-5), and Brock Street (11-5) in Whitby; All or Nothing (11-7) in Oshawa; Falcon (1-10) in Ajax; Chronicle (12-6) in Bowmanville; and Old Flame (11-6) in Port Perry. As well, Second Wedge in Uxbridge, which is normally closed on Mondays, will open on Labour Day from 12-6
- Most tourist attractions, including Oshawa’s Parkwood Estates, Oshawa Zoo and Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Clarington
- All three casinos: Pickering Casino Resort, Ajax Casino and Blue Heron Casino in Scugog
- Most cannabis stores
Closed:
- Pickering Town Centre and Oshawa Centre will be closed, though most restaurants with patios or street-facing entrances will be open
- Mass vaccination clinics are winding down and most will be closed Labour Day. For pharmacy vaccination clinics it’s best to call ahead
- Most grocery stores and retail outlets
- Museums and art galleries
- City and Town offices, libraries, most pools and community centres
- Shopping plazas, though some stores, such as convenience stores, will remain open
- All LCBO outlets
- Canada Post
- Garbage and recycling will be collected the next day for everyone who normally has Monday service in Durham
Transit
Durham Transit and Metrolinx GO Train service will operate on a holiday/weekend schedule
