This year in Mississauga — and everywhere else, of course — New Year’s Day falls on Thursday, Jan. 1, 2026.

While most businesses shut down on New Year’s Day each year, there are some exceptions.

To be sure when making your plans, it’s always best to either call ahead or check your destination online for any reduced hours of operation or closures.

Here’s what’s open and closed in Mississauga on New Year’s Day (Jan. 1, 2026):

Open:

  • Square One Shopping Centre (11 a.m. to 6 p.m.)
  • Walmart Supercentre Square One
  • Whole Foods Square One (10 a.m. to 9 p.m.)
  • Some smaller grocery stores, such as Rabba
  • Select Shoppers Drug Marts (call ahead)
  • Celebration Square Ice Rink
  • Some restaurants, but call ahead to be sure
  • Wine Rack (MCity 12 noon-8 p.m.)

Closed:

  • Erin Mills Town Centre
  • Heartland Town Centre
  • Dixie Outlet Mall
  • Sheridan Centre
  • Meadowvale Town Centre
  • Non-essential stores at the Mississauga Chinese Centre are closed (call ahead or check online)
  • Most major grocery stores
  • Government offices (including Mississauga City Hall, which reopens on Friday, Jan. 2)
  • 311 Citizen Contact Centre
  • Banks
  • Libraries
  • Community Centres (call ahead or visit City of Mississauga website)
  • LCBO
  • The Beer Store
  • Canada Post
  • Region of Peel non-emergency services — Service Peel counters, Dental Services Contact Centre and dental clinics, Early Years and child care services, housing services, income and social supports, harm reduction program (mobile van)
  • Region of Peel emergency shelter/food/personal support — for urgent homelessness supports including food, supplies, referrals and shelter, call the Street Helpline 24/7 at 1-877-848-8481. For information on emergency shelter, visit the emergency shelter web page or call 905-450-1996
  • Region of Peel — for emergency Peel Living maintenance requests, call the 24-hour request line at 905-790-7335

Transit

  • MiWay will operate on a regular Sunday service schedule on Jan. 1
  • GO Transit will run on a Saturday schedule on Jan. 1
  • Region of Peel TransHelp: All trips for Jan. 1 and 2 must be booked by 7 p.m. on Dec. 31. Buses will run on Jan. 1 from 6 a.m. until 1 a.m. Office is closed on Jan. 1

Garbage/recycling collection

  • no waste/recycling collection on Thursday, Jan. 1. Waste/recycling will be collected one day later
  • All Community Recycling Centres are closed on Jan. 1
