Labour Day is a statutory holiday that falls on the first Monday of September every year and this year, it’s Sept. 1 in Canada.
Labour Day, a holiday since 1894, resulted from pressure brought forth by Canada’s many labour unions on the federal government until legislation was finally introduced by Prime Minister John Sparrow David Thompson, which received royal assent in July 1894.
So what’s open and what’s closed this coming Monday in Niagara Region? Most of Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake businesses remain open as both the city and the town are designated as tourism destinations and thus can remain open on federal or provincial holidays.
The other 10 municipalities in Niagara, including St. Catharines and Welland, are mostly shut down. While some businesses are posting hours, others add “Hours may differ” because it’s a holiday. The best bet? Call ahead.
