Civic Holiday August 7 in Niagara Falls, St. Catharines and Niagara Region: What’s Open and Closed

Open in Niagara

While it’s common knowledge that the first Monday of August is a holiday for people in many parts of Canada, what it’s actually called depends on where you live in the country.

Ontario mostly calls it the Civic Holiday – this year on Monday, Aug. 7 – but there are other names for it here in the province. Some in Toronto refer to it as Simcoe Day. In Guelph, it’s sometimes called John Galt Day, while many in Ottawa refer to it as Colonel By Day.

Despite its many different designations, the day is not a statutory holiday in Nova Scotia, Manitoba, Alberta, or Ontario; however, it is commonly observed by all levels of government, financial institutions and some businesses.

So what’s open and what’s closed next Monday? It’s a guarantee that most of Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake businesses remain open as both the city and the town are designated as tourism destinations and thus can remain open on federal or provincial holidays.

However, as it’s seen as a lesser holiday, not on par with Canada Day or Christmas, the other 10 municipalities in Niagara, including St. Catharines and Welland, are mostly open for this one, too. While some businesses are posting hours, others add “hours may differ” because it’s a holiday. The best bet? Call ahead.
