What's open and closed in Hamilton August 7

The Civic Holiday in Hamilton falls on Monday, Aug. 7, 2023.

Also known as Simcoe Day, the holiday is not quite as formal as some other statutory holidays, but many workers will get to enjoy a day of mid-summer respite.

While government buildings and services will be closed, many businesses often remain open during the Civic Holiday. It’s best to call ahead or check a business’s website and/or social media accounts for confirmation.

  • Hamilton Farmers’ Market:
    • Saturday, Aug. 5: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. (closed Sunday and Monday)

Closed:

  • Government offices
  • All City of Hamilton recreation centres and arenas
  • There will be no mail delivery
  • All Hamilton Public Library branches are closed Sunday, Aug. 6 and Monday, Aug. 7
    • Bookmobile and extended access services are unavailable
    • Virtual Branch is always open at hpl.ca
  • The Tropical Greenhouse at Gage Park
  • All civic museums
  • Hamilton Municipal Parking System offices are no longer open to in-person services. Remote Services (permits, disputes, etc.) will resume on Tuesday, Aug. 8.
    • Parking Control Officers will not be enforcing from Aug. 6 at 5:45 a.m. until Aug. 7 at 10 p.m.
  • The Ontario Works Program, including the Special Supports Program
  • The Licensing and By-Law Phone Queue Line 905-546-2782 will be closed on Friday, Aug. 4 at 4:30 p.m. and will reopen Tuesday, Aug. 8 at 8:30 a.m.

  • All subscription trips on DARTS, with the exception of dialysis trips, are cancelled for Aug. 7. If passengers need to travel on this day, they must make a reservation in advance.

Waste collection:

  • Garbage and recycling (blue box, green bin and yard waste) will be collected one day later. Waste must be at the curb by 7 a.m.
  • Community Recycling Centres are closed on Monday, Aug. 7 and reopen Tuesday, Aug. 8.

Transit:

  • HSR will operate on a Sunday or holiday schedule
  • Routes that do not operate on Sundays will not operate on the Civic Holiday, including HSR myRide and Route 18 Waterdown Mountaineer
  • Trans-Cab service will align with HSR Sunday schedules. Service between Countrywide Recycling and the Twenty at Nebo transfer point will not be running.
  • Customers can plan their trips using the HSRnow suite of products that provide real-time, 24/7 access to service information.
  • GO Transit will run on a Saturday schedule.
