What’s open and closed Family Day in Niagara Falls, St Catharines and Niagara Region
Published February 18, 2023 at 7:01 pm

Family Day falls on February 20 this year in St. Catharines, Niagara Falls, Welland and Niagara Region.
Two-thirds of Canadian provinces celebrate Family Day in Canada with the third Monday of February as a statutory holiday, though while most refer to it by that name, not all do. In Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario, British Columbia and New Brunswick, it’s Family Day.
In Manitoba, it’s Louis Riel Day, named after the Metis leader who fought for French and Indigenous rights. In Prince Edward Island, it’s Islander Day. In Nova Scotia, it’s called Nova Scotia Heritage Day. And in the Yukon, it’s Yukon Heritage Day but it’s held on the Friday before the last Sunday in February.
As a provincial holiday and not a federal one, it’s possible some federal offices may be open but all are posting “Hours may differ” so it’s hard to be precise.
Also malls in Niagara Region can be tricky. Since Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake are both designated as “tourist destinations,” closing rules largely do not apply to their boundaries. Outside of those two places, most malls are posting “Hours may differ” because it’s a holiday. The best bet? Call ahead.
