Easter weekend Oshawa, Whitby, Pickering, Ajax, Clarington: What's Open and Closed

It’s Easter weekend in Oshawa, Whitby, Pickering, Ajax, Clarington and the rest of Durham Region and Good Friday (March 29), Easter Sunday (March 31) and Easter Monday (April 1) come early this year.

The last time  Good Friday happened during the last week of March was 2016, when it occurred on March 25. Conversely, Good Friday fell on April 22 in 2011.

Unlike holidays with a set date, Easter is tied to the lunar cycle, coming on the first full moon after the spring equinox.

Most historians believe Jesus was most likely crucified on April 7 in 30 AD but early Christians wanted the holiday to coincide with the Jewish Passover, which falls on the 15th of Nisan in the Hebrew calendar. This date moves around to the lunar cycle, hence the ever-changing dates for Easter.
