Although it often flies under the radar, Mississauga’s art world is vibrant and robust and constantly offering residents interesting, engaging and compelling exhibits.

With the weather getting cooler and the days getting shorter, it’s good to know that you can spend a little (or a lot) of time indoors somewhere other than your house or a mall (malls are great, but who has the disposable income to withstand the tempting allure of so many enticing stores?).

Here’s a look at some interesting exhibits that Mississauga’s artistic venues have in store for the next month or so.

Satellite Exhibition: Pattern Migration – Square One

This exhibit, which wrapped at the Art Gallery of Mississauga (AGM) in September but is still active at Square One, explores the concept of ceramic goods moving around the world and bringing their creator’s culture with them. You can see this exhibit in the luxury wing of the shopping centre from now until Oct. 24.

Memento: A Workshop with Ed Pien – AGM

This hands-on workshop combines both storytelling and art-making and “explores our relationship to objects, their affect, and the memory and narrative embedded in them.” That may sound lofty, but the event is really about exploring the meaning of our dearest possessions and their place in our lives. If anything, it’ll be an interactive trip down memory lane.

This event will take place on Saturday, Oct. 22 from 1:00-3:00 p.m. Registration is required and admission is free.

Info Session: OAC Artists in the Community Workplace Grant – AGM

Are you an artist in need of financial assistance? The Artists in the Community/Workplace Grant from the Ontario Arts Council is available if you need money to bring your art into the community. If you attend this workshop, you’ll learn more about the grant, how to write the grant and project eligibility.

This workshop will take place on Thursday, Nov. 10 at 6:30 p.m. at the AGM.

Art of Yoga – AGM

Although this month’s session has passed, you can visit the AGM for a relaxing Kundalini yoga session one Wednesday per month (the next practice is on Nov. 9). Salimah Kassim-Lakha of YogaVision leads the practices and each meditation is centered on current gallery exhibits. The class is good for both amateur and experienced yogis.
