Friday (Sept. 30 ) is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day to reflect on the tragic events and ongoing legacy of residential schools in Canada.
It is part of the ongoing commitment toward reconciliation with Indigenous people.
The City of Hamilton will observe the day.
Sept. 30 is not a statutory holiday in Ontario, but some businesses and organizations may choose to close. It’s best to check ahead of time.
The federal government established the day, also known as Orange Shirt Day, last year. It is a statutory holiday for federal government workers and federally regulated industries.
Here’s what’s closed on Sept. 30:
- Canada Post
- All federal offices, including passport offices
- City Hall
- City of Hamilton recreational facilities will run on a holiday schedule (HSR will maintain its regular bus schedule)
- City of Hamilton offices and non-emergency services will be closed (waste collection will not be affected)
