What's open an closed in Oshawa, Pickering and Whitby

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recently announced that next Monday (Sept. 19) will be a national holiday and day of mourning for federal workers across Canada as Queen Elizabeth II is buried in England.

Queen Elizabeth II served as Queen of the United Kingdom, Canada and the Commonwealth for 70 years until her death on September 8 at the age of 96.

While only federal workers will officially get the day off Monday there will be some non-federal closures because of collective bargaining agreements, leading to some confusion among Durham residents.

Here’s what will be closed on September 19 in Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa, Clarington, Uxbridge, Scugog and Brock.

Closed:

  • Federal services including passport offices
  • Canada Post
  • Durham Region headquarters in Whitby, the Waste Management Centre, Ontario Works offices and Adult Day Programs at Hillsdale Estates and in Port Perry
  • Municipal buildings and programs in the City of Pickering. As well, Monday’s meeting of Council – the final meeting before the October 24 election – has been moved to Tuesday, September 20. Pickering libraries, however, will be open.
  • The meeting of Council in Ajax has been moved to September 26. All Town services will remain open.
  • Oshawa municipal buildings and services are closed (though Service Oshawa staff will be working from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.) while the libraries remain open, just like Pickering. Recreational facilities will remain open.
  • Clarington’s council meeting schedule is unchanged. All municipal services will be open.
  • In Uxbridge, all municipal buildings and services with the exception of the local arena will be closed.
  • Scugog’s Municipal Office will be closed, as will the Scugog Arena and Fire Administration. The Planning and Community Affairs meeting will be re-scheduled to Tuesday.
  • Brock Township will be business as usual

While September 19, 2022, is not a statutory holiday, businesses may still choose to honour the day of mourning, so it’s best to check ahead and confirm.
