What January 2026 weather could look like in southern Ontario

The New Year is expected to arrive with a wintery punch across southern Ontario, with sharp temperature swings, snowy stretches and a few mild breaks in between.

While the Farmers’ Almanac suggests a colder and drier winter in the east and milder, snowier conditions farther west, here’s what January 2026 could have in store for the region:

The first part of the month (Jan. 1 to 5) will kick off with flurries and bitterly cold temperatures.

From Jan. 6 to 9, occasional snow mixed with rain will move in, with colder conditions to the east and slightly milder air to the west.

A more moderate stretch arrives Jan. 10 to 18, bringing a mix of scattered rain and snow in the east, while western areas may see more sunshine and above-seasonal warmth.

Between Jan. 19 and Jan. 21 another mix of rain and snow is anticipated under mild temperatures.

As the month closes out (Jan. 22 to 31), snowy periods will return ahead of a very cold finish.

The Farmers’ Almanac predicts average temperatures near –6.5 C, which is around 2 C below seasonal in the east and slightly above normal in the west. Precipitation totals may reach 40 mm, coming in below average for most of the region–except areas farther west, which may see more snow.
