The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has taken over an investigation following an incident on Highway 403 in Mississauga last night where a car hit a guardrail resulting in a Peel Regional Police (PRP) officer discharging a firearm at a man.

According to the SIU, on Saturday (Jun. 24) at approximately, 8 p.m., officers attended the area of Highway 401 and Highway 403 to assist a vehicle that had struck a guardrail.

When police approached the vehicle, the driver exited while holding a hammer.

There was an interaction, and one officer discharged his firearm at the man.

The man was arrested and taken to hospital for treatment of injuries.

The SIU says, “the man was not struck as a result of the police firearm discharge. However, section 16 of the Special Investigations Unit Act, 2019, provides that police firearm discharges fall within the Unit’s jurisdiction even where they do not result in injury.”

Three investigators and three forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.

The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation, including video or photos, to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529.
