A big win for a Welland woman equaled a big win for the Port Colborne food bank.

On the weekend, Rebecca Clark got a call from Port Cares, the city’s food bank, to tell her she had won $38,805 in their latest 50/50 draw.

“Congrats to Rebecca Clark of Welland, our seventh lucky winner for our 50/50 draws,” posted Port Cares.

“Rebecca was in shock when we phoned her and said she’s ‘never won anything before!’ HUGE thanks to everyone who bought tickets for this draw. All proceeds go towards our food bank.”

Port Cares is a nonprofit poverty reduction agency providing employment, child development, food, literacy, skills, homelessness and youth services in South Niagara since 1986.

The agency is “dedicated to improving the lives of South Niagara individuals and families living in poverty. For more than 30 years, Port Cares has supported the area’s most vulnerable by providing essentials of daily living – food, housing, crisis intervention as well as education and training.”

The group relies on the proceeds of fundraising events to sustain these much-needed services. “Since the on-set of the pandemic, these online draws are an alternative way to fund their work so that they can continue to make a difference for families struggling to overcome hardship.”
