Starting in July, the Niagara Police started investigating a series of thefts of American licences plates being stolen in hotel parking lots in Niagara Falls and St. Catharines.

Finally, yesterday (August 16) at 11 pm, officers sitting in a hotel parking lot on Fallsview Blvd. near Robinson St. saw a youth get out of a car to yank an American licence plate off a parked car. He was arrested as he tried to leave the lot.

It turned out he had multiple stolen American licence plates in the car. An investigation led to the recovery of a total of 75 American and Canadian license plates and they also realized he had committed a gas drive-off in Thorold on August 2.

A 16-year-old male from Welland has been charged with 28 counts of stolen property, attempting to commit an indictable offense, and theft under $5,000 for the gas station incident.

He was held in custody for a video bail hearing at the courthouse in St. Catharines today (August 17).

As a minor, the police are unable to identify him to the public.

The investigation remains ongoing and further charges are anticipated. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the investigating officers by calling 905-0688-4111, option 3, extension 1008391.
