A 26-year-old Welland man died as the result of a serious head-on collision in West Lincoln yesterday (July 5) afternoon.

Niagara Regional Police say the man was passing another car in the eastbound lane of the Canborough Road and Baldwin Road area at 2:35 pm when he hit a westbound pick-up truck being driven by a 55-year-old man from Canfield, Ontario.

Police say the collision caused such extensive damage to the vehicles that the Niagara Emergency Medical Services and West Lincoln Fire Department had to be called in because “the drivers needed to be mechanically extricated from the wreckage.”

The Welland man was immediately airlifted from the site and later died of his injuries in the hospital.

The Caufield man remains in hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The road was closed for several hours while police investigated, reopening just before midnight.

Anyone who may have witnessed the collision is asked to contact detectives at 905-688-4111, extension 1009472.
