A freezing rain warning has been issued for Toronto, Mississauga and the GTA on Monday.
A warning issued earlier for southern Ontario is now extending to the GTA including Mississauga, Brampton, Toronto, Caledon, and Durham Region.
A brief period of freezing rain is expected Monday morning in these areas, according to the warning from Environment and Climate Change Canada.
Freezing rain could lead to ice build-up on some surfaces.
A low-pressure system is approaching southern Ontario and will bring a mixture of precipitation to the area, the warning states.
It is expected to begin as freezing rain or rain. The freezing rain is expected to transition to rain or drizzle near midday as temperatures rise above the freezing mark.
Areas near Lake Ontario are expected to receive mostly rain through this event.
Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery.
“Take extra care when walking or driving in affected areas,” the warning states. “Freezing rain warnings are issued when rain falling in sub-zero temperatures creates ice build-up and icy surfaces.”
