Weather alert issued for much of southern Ontario

A weather alert has been issued for much of southern Ontario.

Environment Canada has issued a yellow severe thunderstorm watch for many places, stretching from the Kingston area south to Windsor.

The Greater Toronto Area, Hamilton, Niagara Region, and London are among the places affected.

“Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain,” Environment Canada said.

Storms could happen late Tuesday morning into the early evening.

Torrential downpours that bring local rainfall amounts of more than 50 mm are possible.

Wind gusts of 90 to 110 km/h and quarter to ping pong ball sized hail could also occur.

“The main hazards will be heavy rainfall and damaging wind gusts,” forecasters said.

“Local rainfall amounts in excess of 50 mm may occur for areas that receive multiple thunderstorms. The greatest likelihood for damaging wind gusts is expected to be over southwestern Ontario. A few instances of large hail are possible.”

Utility outages may happen, along with damage to roofs, fences, branches, or soft shelters, Environment Canada said.
