A Caledon man is facing charges after police say they found a prohibited weapon in a vehicle during a traffic stop last week.

The incident happened just after 12 a.m. on Sunday when the OPP says officers from the Caledon detachment stopped a vehicle in the area of Mayfield Road near Torbram Road.

Police say officers had reason to believe the 22-year-old driver was impaired by alcohol, and a search of the vehicle revealed open liquor, police say.

But officers also found a “prohibited weapon” during the search leading to multiple weapons-related charges. Police have not said what type of weapon was seized in the search.

The Caledon OPP has charged Manjinder Rai, 22, of Caledon with multiple offences including driving motor vehicle with open container of liquor, possession of weapon for a dangerous purpose and possession of a prohibited device.

The accused is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Orangeville on Feb. 29 to answer the charges. Police also impounded the vehicle for seven days while the driver’s licence was suspended for a period of 90 days.
