Joel Watson pounced on a loose ball in the crease with five seconds left to help preserve a 13-11 win for the Brooklin Lacrosse Club and give the team from north Whitby a perfect 4-0 start to the Major Series Lacrosse season.

Watson, a Whitby Warriors and Clarington Green Gaels alum, was making his first-ever MSL start. The big goalkeeper was protected by Brooklin ahead of the 2020 draft.

Curtis Knight and Corey Kearnan led Brooklin on offense with four goals each.

The team is now halfway through the tournament-style season – dubbed the MSL Classic – which marks the first competitive lacrosse for the league since 2019.

All games in the tournament, which wraps up August 26, are being played at the Toronto Rock Athletic Centre in Oakville.

Brooklin’s players, whose thoughts are with teammate Corey Upshaw – now in a Kingston hospital after a serious ATV accident – are back in action tonight against Oakville.
