Waterloo Record breaking year

An unprecedented increase in air travel has been seen across Ontario over the last few years, signaling that the wounds sustained from the COVID-19 pandemic may be almost done healing.

While major airports such as Pearson International Airport in Mississauga are seeing an increase in numbers in the millions, smaller-scale airports across the province are still having their victory lap when it comes to a boost in air travel clients.

The Region of Waterloo International Airport (YKF) concluded a record-breaking year last year and celebrated a close to nineteen per cent increase in traffic when compared to stats from 2022.

When broken down into raw data — from an official press release — approximately 445,312 passengers used Waterloo International in 2023, which locked the facility in as one of the 20 busiest airports in Canada.

With no signs of slowing down, facility administrators are looking toward the future, with an expansion project that will help the Waterloo facility maintain one million passengers moving through the airport every year once completed.

Karen Redman, the airport’s regional chair, stated in an official release, “This increased growth reinforces our work on the 20-year Airport master plan, which guides development at YKF.”

For those wondering which airlines are available during this period of growth, Waterloo International provides flights from Flair, Sunwing and WestJet, with direct flights to locations in Canada, the US, Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Cuba.

These locations include Calgary, Cancun, Fort Lauderdale, Las Vegas, Orlando, Sanford, Puerto Vallarta, Punta Cana, Vancouver and Varadero.

The Region of Waterloo International Airport is also planning a summer 2024 schedule, which will add locations like Abbotsford, Charlottetown, Deer Lake, Halifax, Edmonton, St. Johns and Winnipeg.
