Credit Valley Conservation (CVC) says a water safety statement is in effect for Brampton and Mississauga.

CVC says that Environment Canada has released a severe thunderstorm watch with the potential for strong wind gusts, hail and periods of heavy rain in localized areas. Light to moderate rain is expected to begin this afternoon and continue into this evening.

CVC says areas that experience heavy rainfall are expected to encounter an increase in runoff, with higher water levels and flows in the watercourses and throughout the watershed.

“While flooding of the Credit River and its major tributaries is not expected, higher water levels and flows will result in local streams and rivers becoming dangerous, especially in the vicinity of culverts, bridges and dams,” CVC said in a statement.

“The public is advised to stay away from all watercourses, especially children and pets. Residents living near watercourses are advised to remove or secure all loose items in the floodplain.

The watershed conditions statement for water safety will be in effect through to Saturday, May 30, 2020, or until further notice.
