Members of Mississauga’s Pakistani community say they will ramp up protests this week to denounce the ouster of that country’s Prime Minister.
Mirroring demonstrations across Pakistan since Imran Khan was removed from office this week, his supporters here have been gathering in front of Mississauga City Hall to voice their disapproval and plan to continue with a larger rally slated for this Friday (April 15).
On April 10 Pakistan’s National Assembly removed Khan from office following a vote of no-confidence. Pakistan’s parliament has since chosen Shehbaz Sharif as the new prime minister.
Khan, a former cricket player, came to power in 2018 with his Tehreek-e-Insaf party but has since lost support of political allies and the Pakistani military, according to reports.
Many supporters of Khan and his party believe his ouster was fuelled by foreign interests that wanted him removed from office.
