A suspected arsonist started a fire on the front step of a Hamilton home two weeks ago — which led to injuries when the residents, including a young child, had to jump out of a window to escape.

The Hamilton Police (HPS) say they are looking for witnesses to come forward in regard to the “targeted residential arson” that occurred at 48 Sanford Ave. S. on Feb. 13. Around 9:50 p.m. on that Monday night, HPS officers and emergency partners responded to what has been labelled a multi-unit residential fire.

“During evacuation, the residents were unable to exit the front door and had to jump out a second-storey window,” HPS says. “The family including a young child suffered injuries as a result.

“Investigators are encouraging the responsible party to seek legal counsel and turn themselves in,” the police add.

Video released by HPS on Monday and shared with media outlets shows a suspect wearing a headlamp cross Sanford Ave. before setting the fire.

The suspect is described as a white man with a medium build. He was wearing dark pants, dark jacket and a dark toque with a headlamp.

Any resident who has information that might support this criminal investigation is asked to contact HPS Sgt. George Gallant (905-540-5085).

Information may also be shared anonymously through Crime Stoppers (1-800-222-8477; online at crimestoppershamilton.com).
