In the Lisbon tradition celebrating Saint Anthony, four couples will marry at a huge Portuguese festival in Mississauga.

The wedding is just part of the festivities for the new Portugalo Fest, organized by Portugalo – Portuguese Heritage Inc., on Sept. 9 at Celebration Square. The inaugural event was in 2022 and was a celebration of Portugal’s rich and colourful heritage, including dance, music and food, according to organizers.

Last year, was the first-ever Lisbon-style group wedding on Canadian soil, according to organizers. The group wedding is a tribute to the traditional “Noivas de Santo António” (Brides of St. Anthony) of Lisbon every June 12.

This year, a certified officiant will marry four couples and the ceremony will be shown on the big screens at Celebration Square. And just as in Lisbon, the wedding is completely paid for including the dress, suit, make-up, bouquet, cake, officiant and photographer.

The wedding is slated to start at 2:30 p.m.

“This group-style wedding is the most unique aspect of Portugalo Fest and the only one of its kind in Canada,” organizers say.

Musicians such as Bombos Arsenal do Minho, and Tony Camara e os Sonhos along with cultural dance groups will perform throughout the festival.

There is also a marketplace with local vendors, Portuguese food, wine and beer.

The kid’s zone, from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m., includes a puppet show, magic show, sports, crafts, an ice cream truck, face painting and balloon animals.

The festival is free. It kicks off at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 9 and runs until 11 p.m. at Mississauga Celebration Square, 300 City Centre Dr.
