Walmart to take over Hudson’s Bay space in Ontario mall

A Walmart will move into a vacant Hudson’s Bay space in Ontario.

It has been over a year since the Hudson’s Bay Company closed all 96 stores across Canada in May 2025.

Many of the large spaces, once anchors at large malls, remain vacant. However, that is starting to change.

In June, Georgian Mall in Barrie announced it had secured three tenants to occupy the former Hudson’s Bay unit in the mall.

This week, Walmart Canada announced it will be the anchor tenant at Place d’Orléans in Ottawa with a new Supercentre expected to open by 2027.

The new Supercentre will occupy the former Hudson’s Bay 115,500-square-foot space in the mall.

“As we continue to announce new stores as part of our $6.5 billion investment in Canada announced last year, we’re proud to introduce this new two-level Supercentre in Ottawa’s Place d’Orléans mall,” said Shawn Fujiki, senior director, real estate, Walmart Canada. “Through this new Supercentre, we’re providing Ottawa residents with even more access to our everyday low prices.”

Place d’Orléans welcomes the new tenant.

“The opening of Walmart at Place d’Orléans represents a significant milestone for the centre,” said Patrick Sullivan, president and chief operating officer of Primaris REIT, owner of Place d’Orléans. “Walmart is a proven traffic driver, and we expect its presence to materially increase footfall and create incremental opportunities for our existing retailers, while also supporting continued tenant demand and future merchandising enhancements across the centre.”

Walmart Canada operates 150 stores in Ontario and employs over 45,000 people in the province.
