Walmart has confirmed there was a theft at a Mississauga store after a video circulating on social media appears to show a man disguised as an employee taking a TV.

The video was posted on the @VideshiBhartiya X (Twitter) account on Sept. 9 and since then has been posted on several other accounts.

“Man wore an employee vest and ran away with a TV from walmart in Mississauga,” the post reads.

A Walmart spokesperson confirmed there was a theft.

“We are aware of this incident, which took place at our Heartland Walmart store over the weekend where an individual committed theft,” the spokesperson told insauga.com.

The spokesperson said they cannot comment further as this matter is currently under police investigation.

There was a theft report from the Heartland Walmart at 1:48 p.m. on Sept. 9, a Peel Regional Police spokesperson told insauga.com. The incident is currently under investigation, the spokesperson said.

The 14-second video shows a man walking (not really running) away from the Walmart at Heartland Centre and toward the Dollarama on Plymouth Drive with what appears to be a television box.

He is clearly wearing a Walmart employee vest. The video pans to two other people also filming the man.

The video ends with the man walking toward trees as he drags the box away.

If it is true, this wouldn’t be the first time a person has dressed as a Walmart employee to take a TV — a similar incident happened in the U.S. in 2018.

While some commenters on social media praised the man for taking the TV as many people struggle with inflation, Walmart said thefts like this cause prices to increase.

“We want to reduce theft as much as possible in order to keep our everyday low prices as we continue to help Canadians save money and live better,” the spokesperson said.
