Charges have been laid after police tracked a stolen car to Brampton, arresting one person in what’s being called a “high-risk takedown.”
A man was driving his car in the area of Victoria Park Avenue and Consumer Road in Toronto when the driver was bumped from behind by another vehicle, according to the Toronto Police Service.
When the driver pulled over, police say four masked men approached the victim’s vehicle, forcing the driver’s door open.
The men demanded the driver’s keys and assaulted the victim, pulling him out of the car and robbing him of the car and personal items.
Two of the suspects took off in the victim’s car while the others fled in the second vehicle.
Police say the driver suffered minor injuries in the assault.
Around 12 hours later police say investigators tracked the vehicles to Brampton where members of the Provincial Car Jacking Task Force made “a high-risk takedown.”
At least one suspect evaded police in the stolen car, but officers caught one man who tried to make a getaway on foot and the stolen car was later found in Toronto, police said. Police say 24-year-old Whitby man has been arrested and the stolen car has been seized by police for forensic examination.
Marsih Mohamed, 24, of Whitby has been charged with multiple offences including robbery with violence, theft of motor vehicle and possession of break in tools.
The accused was scheduled to appear in court on Monday at the Toronto Regional Bail Centre.
The Provincial Car Jacking Task Force is a collaboration between police services from across the GTA, including Toronto, York Regional Police and Peel Regional Police. The task force says there have been more than 300 carjackings in the GTA so far this year.
