A youth faces several charges after a senior faced a racist attack in Woodstock this week.

Video circulating online captures the verbal and physical attack of the Sikh man opposite a school in Woodstock.

A boy, wearing a Raptors hoodie and face covering, approaches the senior and asks: “What are you doing in my country? Answer the f** question.”

The senior moves away from the boy, but the youth continues to walk toward him, spouting racially charged comments and slurs.

“You need me to speak your language?” the boy says at one point.

The man appears to call the police and use a cell phone to film the attack. The boy pushes the man several times.

One of the videos circulating online ends with police arriving and arresting the youth.

Woodstock Police said officers responded to reports of a disturbance near Turtle Island School on Knights Lane on April 22 at approximately 11:35 a.m.

A youth assaulted an elderly individual who was walking on a sidewalk, police said.

“The youth targeted the victim based on their ethnicity, while yelling racially charged comments and obscenities,” police said in a news release.

The man did not suffer physical injuries, police added.

Police said that following the incident, the youth jumped a fence into the Turtle Island School property before exiting the school area.

No students were harmed during the incident, police said.

A young person has been charged with assault, uttering threats – cause death or bodily harm, and criminal harassment – threatening conduct.

Under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, the young person cannot be identified.

The accused was held in custody for a bail hearing.

Police said they are aware of videos circulating on social media and asked people to submit footage to police.

The Woodstock Police added that they are committed to ensuring all members of the community feel safe and protected.

“Acts of hate have no place in our community,” police said. “We encourage anyone who has experienced or witnessed a hate-motivated incident to report it to police. Woodstock Police Service will pursue and hold those who commit hate crimes accountable.”
