Islamophobia incident on Durham Transit bus

A hijabi-wearing women travelling between Scarborough and Ajax on a Durham Transit bus was both verbally and physically assaulted in a chilling case of Islamophobia caught on video.

A man began yelling at a woman sitting on the bus, telling her to “f*** off, “b****, don’t sit next to me,” as well as calling her a “terrorist.” The incident further escalated when the man struck her with his hand and he walked past.

Another hijabi passenger on the bus intervened and shouted at the man, now on the other side of the bus. “You don’t get to hit girls just because they’re Muslim. Go to hell.”

“You need to learn to respect people. If you can’t … get off the bus.”

The National Council of Canadian Muslims, who posted the video, said they were “outraged” and said violent Islamophobia continues to be on the rise.

“The fact that it constantly occurs in broad daylight in public spaces should send alarms to all levels of government, given Canada’s dark history with violent Islamophobia. We cannot afford to wait until an incident like this turns to murder yet again, all levels of government must condemn and take concrete action.”

Scarborough Centre-Don Valley East MP Salma Zahid called it “disturbing.”

“This cannot be normalized. Just because someone chooses to wear a symbol of their faith, whether it is a hijab, a kippah or a turban, does not mean they should be subjected to discrimination, hatred or violence.”

The incident happened in Scarborough and Toronto Police have been informed but have not yet released a statement.
