The awards keep coming for fast-rising Mississauga star Maitreyi Ramakrishnan.

Khaled Iwamura in an exclusive video chat with Maitreyi Ramakrishnan talks about Netflix’s season 4 of “Never have I ever”, what she misses most about Mississauga, what this award she is receiving means to her and so much more.

The 20-year-old star of Netflix’s Never Have I Ever, who also voices the role of Priya in Pixar’s just-released Disney+ hit Turning Red, will receive yet another honour at the upcoming 2022 Canadian Screen Awards (CSA).

Ramakrishnan will receive the 2022 Radius Award, presented by MADE|NOUS, which honours a Canadian whose work is making waves globally.

MADE|NOUS is a promotional campaign focused on the Canadian entertainment and media industry and Canadian content, with the goal of promoting Canadian creators in film, television, video games and digital entertainment.

The Canadian Screen Awards will be broadcast on CBC and CBC Gem on April 10 at 8 p.m.

Ramakrishnan was among the Canadians on Time magazine’s 100 Next list released early last year. It’s an annual list of individuals who are shaping the future of their fields and defining the next generation of leadership.

She was included in the “Phenoms” section of Time’s list, which is an expansion of the magazine’s flagship Time 100 franchise that highlights emerging leaders.

In addition to that recognition, the Mississauga native, recently identified by insauga.com as being among the “incredible women of Mississauga,” has also laid claim to a number of awards:

  • Best Actor in a Comedy: New York Times
  • Best Actress in a Breakthrough Comedy Role: 2021 Gracies (awards presented by the Alliance for Women in Media Foundation in the United States to celebrate and honor programming created for women, by women and about women)
  • Best Breakout in TV: 2021 Asian American Awards

Ramakrishnan, who in Never Have I Ever plays the lead role of a first-generation Indian-American dealing with the death of her father and the hormone-fuelled challenges of adolescence, has also been nominated for several other awards.

She auditioned for the part in the coming-of-age comedy series after seeing an open casting call on social media. She beat out some 15,000 other hopefuls and went on to receive an Independent Spirit Award nomination for her performance.

Comedy star and Never Have I Ever co-creator Mindy Kaling wrote the profile of the Tamil-Canadian performer in the Time article. She wrote Ramakrishnan is a “gifted comic actress” who “has an activist’s heart and wants to use her platform to help others.”

The hour-long 2022 CSA show is a star-powered showcase of Canadian content, creators say, adding it “will shine a spotlight on the Canadian content and notable moments that made us laugh, cry and reflect over the past year.”
