When St. Catharines holds a land-use public meeting about a large chunk of Ontario St., it will likely draw some attention as the former GM lands falls within the study area.

When St. Catharines holds a public meeting over land-use for a wide swath of Ontario St., it will likely draw a lot of interest because part of the study area includes the contentious former GM lands.

The study area runs along Ontario St. from the QEW in the north to Welland Ave. in the south so it incorporates a large residential and commercial area of which the GM lands are just a small portion.

The public open house will be held on Feb. 7 at the Holiday Inn and Suites St. Catharines Conference Centre, in the Merlot Room.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. with a presentation at 7 pm, followed by a question-and-answer session. The City will also share some of the presentations from that meeting on their website following the event.

With the news that the owners of the GM lands have obtained a demolition permit for the site, the history of the highly contentious lands is long and, at times, convoluted.

To help understand what the city is hoping to achieve with the land-use study, they released this short video to explain the secondary plan study.
