Pedestrian and cyclist safety has been top of mind in Mississauga and surrounding cities in recent months in the wake of several tragic–and in many cases, preventable–crashes and collisions with vehicles.

But with Mississauga focusing on allowing more residents to walk and cycle to their destinations with ease–in fact, the city is investing in a Cycling Master Plan–it looks like life is getting even easier for those who sometimes choose bicycles over vehicles.

The City of Mississauga recently announced that it has some new crossrides that were unbagged less than a week ago.

For those who are unaware, crossrides allow cyclists to stay on their bikes while crossing through intersections. They may be located where multi-use trails or cycle tracks cross a road.

How do you know they’re there?

Crossrides are identified with a line of painted squares on both sides of the crossing, and may also include painted bicycle marks.

You can see a video of one such crossride, located at the Winston Churchill and Britannia intersection in Meadowvale, below:

So, where are the newest crossrides located?

  • Burnhamthorpe Rd. E and Fieldgate Dr.
  • Burnhamthorpe Rd. E Midblock between Fieldgate Dr. and Ponytrail Dr. (location of future hydro corridor multi-use trail)
  • Burnhamthorpe Rd. E and Ponytrail Dr.
  • Burnhamthorpe Rd. E and Bough Beeches Blvd.

And thankfully for riders, more are coming and planned for the following intersections:

  • Matheson Blvd. W and Terry Fox Way
  • Rathburn Rd. W and Deer Run
  • Rathburn Rd. W and Wakefield Cres.
  • Rathburn Rd. W and Perivale Rd.

Are you using the new crossrides in Mississauga?
