A video circulating on social media appears to show a driver reversing on Hwy. 401 in Mississauga.

The dashcam video showing the dangerous driving maneuver in Mississauga was posted on Twitter today (March 1).

The footage, timestamped around 7 a.m. on Feb. 28, shows a car reversing in the westbound lanes of Hwy. 401 just past the Mavis Road exit. People on Twitter speculate the driver had missed the exit and didn’t want to get off at the next one.

“What part of  ‘if you missed your exit, get off at the next’ does that driver not understand?” one person writes on Twitter.

“10 minutes if that out of your way to take the next exit. Couldn’t even be bothered to get onto the shoulder?!” another writes.

And a few people suggested this kind of driving is not new.

“Every day I see this kind of stuff coming in to and going out of Toronto,” one person wrote. “I’ve got the dash cam vids to prove it. Crazy times on the road since Covid. It’s like some drivers out there are giving us all the proverbial finger when they pull stunts like this.”

There are two recent cases of drivers travelling the wrong way on Mississauga highways.

Police were investigating after a car entered Hwy. 403 travelling the wrong way at Hurontario Street nearly hitting several vehicles on Feb. 14.

And Mississauga OPP stopped a driver travelling the wrong way on Hwy. 407 at the Mississauga and Brampton border on Jan. 29.

But this latest incident is clearly not a case of a driver mistakenly entering the highway the wrong way. This driver blatantly chooses to put others safety at risk. Fortunately, it appears as if drivers could get out of the way in time and there were no collisions reported.
