Shoppers were hurried out of a Brampton mall after someone mistook what’s believed to be an umbrella for a firearm on the weekend.
The incident happened around 7:45 p.m. on Saturday when Peel Regional Police say they received a call about a possible weapon seen at Bramalea City Centre.
Videos posted on social media show mall visitors leaving BCC in a hurry while a voice on the intercom can be heard telling shoppers to leave “immediately” through the nearest exit.
Officers including the PRP tactical team descended on the mall but an investigation revealed the suspicious item wasn’t a firearm or any kind of weapon.

Multiple users on social media have reported the item was an umbrella, but a police spokesperson was unable to confirm what the object actually was.
No charges were laid and nothing was seized during the incident, police confirmed to INsauga.com.
Even though the incident was a false alarm, police are encouraging residents “to report any potential threat to the police.”
“We are thankful that there was no threat after our investigation and that no one suffered injuries,” police said in a statement to INsauga.com.
