Jeremy Renner was getting his steps in during one of the hottest days of the summer in Hamilton.

The two-time Academy Award-nominated actor and his castmates have been in the city to film scenes for “The Mayor of Kingstown,” a new series for the Paramount+ streaming service. The YouTube channel Hollywood North Update captured Renner and castmate Dorly Jean-Louis crossing Queenston Road at Parkdale Avenue South on Thursday (Aug. 26).

“The Mayor of Kingstown” is a series set in a dying Michigan town where the prison-industrial complex is the only source of growth. Renner portrays Mike McLusky, a member of a family that is attempting to assert control in the city. Themes in the series include systemic racism, corruption and inequality.

Hamilton, as a post-industrial city, has often been used to stand in for Detroit in productions filmed in Ontario.

The series was co-created by Taylor Sheridan and Hugh Dillon. Sheridan’s other projects have included the recent series “Yellowstone,” which starred Kevin Costner. Dillon is well-known as an actor and as the frontman of the Canadian rock band The Headstones.

The series’ name is a reference to Dillon’s hometown of Kingston, Ont., which has largest concentration of correctional facilities of any city in Canada. Other reports have stated that “Kingstown” will be filming in the former Kingston Penitentiary, which closed in 2013.

The cast also includes Diane Wiest and Emma Laird.

Renner, 50, was nominated for acting Academy Awards for his roles in “The Hurt Locker” (2008) and “The Town” (2010). He also starred in “Captain America: Civil War” and “Avengers: Age of Ultron.”
