Multiple shipping containers burned in a commercial fire sending huge plumes of smoke over Mississauga Thursday.

The fire broke out at a commercial facility in the 2600 block of Drew Road near Torbram and Derry Roads Thursday around 5:30 p.m.

“Firefighters battling an intermodal container fire at a commercial business on Drew Road,” said Fire Chief Deryn Rizzi in a post on X.

Thick, black smoke could be seen around the area.

“Lots of thick black smoke and strong odour in the area,” Peel Regional Police said on X. “Please do not try to come to scene to be an onlooker. Continue to avoid the area if possible.”

Approximately 14 intermodal or shipping containers caught fire, a Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services spokesperson told INsauga.

The refrigerated containers were all empty, the spokesperson said. The refrigeration of the units is powered by diesel, which led to the burning of fuel and a runoff.

Region of Peel and Provincial Spills Action Centre were notified of the diesel runoff, Rizzi said.

There were no injuries reported.

Pearson Airport advised it was aware of the fire located off airport property.

“There is currently no impact to operations,” Pearson Airport said Thursday night. “Aircraft are continuing to land and depart safely.”

As of 7 a.m. Friday, fire crews were on still on scene for fire watch.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
