An e-scooter rider was spotted on Highway 403 in Mississauga and part of the unlawful trip was caught on video.

The nine-second video captures the rider travelling westbound on the highway near the Hurontario Street on-ramp, according to a June 11 post on the Mississauga sub-Reddit.

The video shows a young person checking a cellphone with earbuds in while riding the e-scooter.

“Lol wow. No helmet. Ear buds in, and is this moron looking at his phone?” one person wrote on Reddit.

There were no reports of the incident to police on Wednesday, Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Kerry Schmidt told INsauga.com.

Like bicycles, e-scooters are not permitted on highways in Ontario, according to the province. Riders could face fines of up to $2,500 for violations.

Other Canadian provinces have different regulations, including British Columbia where e-scooters are allowed on certain highways.

E-scooters are permitted on local roads in some municipalities including Mississauga.

In spring 2021, the City of Mississauga set out rules for e-scooters. The scooter must be equipped with a hand brake, lights, bell and kickstand. Riders must be at least 16 years old and wear a helmet up to age 18.

They are allowed on roads with a posted speed limit of up to 50 km/h. The default speed on Mississauga streets is 50 km/h unless otherwise posted.

An e-scooter rider struck by an SUV while crossing the on-ramp lane on Highway 401 Liverpool Road in Pickering on June 4 died this week. The 21-year-old rider from Pickering was transported to hospital with serious injuries and died on Monday.
